I just did this recently & loved how it came out...

Use a black & white (or sepia) photo
On a neutral background (Black/ White/ kraft)
Then use only ONE other color for your patterned paper & embellies!

Well... tried this one, but discovered *gulp* I have run out of 12x12 black cardstock! affraid affraid affraid I don't own any craft paper at all, and white just didn't work... so I hope this counts! What a Face
